Challenge

Seven high school students with varying levels of VR experience - some with none at all - needed to collaborate to build and publish a fully functional VR experience in just four weeks. The challenge was not just technical but human: assigning roles, maintaining momentum and guiding a team of first-time creators through an entirely new medium under a tight deadline.

Goal

Oversee the concept development and full production of an original VR escape room experience, ensuring every student had a meaningful role, stayed on task and contributed to a publishable final product.

My Contribution

Assigned each student a production role - Art Director, Design Director, Producer, Sound Designer/Narrator, Technical Artist, Technical Director and Writer/Production Designer - based on their strengths and interests. Guided the team through concept development, kept production on schedule, facilitated creative decision-making and stepped in to problem-solve when technical or creative blockers arose. Bridged the gap between students with no VR experience and those with more, ensuring the team moved forward together rather than leaving anyone behind.

What it Means to work in VR/XR

Every creative decision - a sound cue, a spatial layout, a lighting choice - directly affects how someone physically feels inside the experience. As Executive Producer my job was to translate a story concept into a technically executable plan while managing a team of seven across disciplines that most of them had never touched before. That requires not just production knowledge but the ability to communicate across creative and technical languages simultaneously — which is fundamentally a communications skill.

Project Hopeless - an immersive space prison escape - is live and publicly playable. Every student completed the program with a published credit and hands-on experience in a professional production workflow.
